Corinth was the "Las Vegas" of antiquity: rich and wild. Paul planted a church there, but it fell into chaos: factions, immorality, lawsuits, and drunk communions.
Paul writes emergency surgery. It is a "problem-solution" letter: for every scandal, he applies the Cross.
"So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."1 CORINTHIANS
The theology confronts Human Wisdom with the Foolishness of the Cross.
1. Foolishness of the Cross (Ch. 1):
Greeks loved philosophy. Paul says: "The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing." God chose foolish things to shame the wise. Christianity isn't about looking smart; it's about needing a Savior.
2. The Body of Christ (Ch. 12):
The eye cannot say to the hand "I have no need of you." Diversity of gifts is not for competition, but for the common good. Unity is harmony, not uniformity.
3. The More Excellent Way (Ch. 13):
Amidst the gifts debate, Paul drops the Love (Agape) bomb. Without love, you are just noise ("clanging cymbal"). Love is the only proof of maturity.
Where does 1 Corinthians meet you?
1. When Church Disappoints:
Hurt by church politics? Corinth is your case study. Paul doesn't close the church; he points it to Christ. Don't leave; fight for health.
2. Holiness in a Sexualized Culture:
Corinth was sex-obsessed. Paul says: "Flee from sexual immorality... your body is a temple." We are not just biology; we are temples.
3. Certainty of Resurrection (Ch. 15):
If death is the end, we are miserable. But Christ is risen! Our labor is not in vain. Death is swallowed up in victory.
