Probably the oldest NT letter. Paul founded the church in Thessalonica quickly before being chased out. Worried about these "baby Christians" under persecution, he writes with relief upon hearing they stood firm. It encourages a model church with questions about the future.
"For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first."1 THESSALONIANS
The theology focuses on Sanctification today in light of the Coming tomorrow.
1. A Model Church (Ch. 1):
Paul praises their work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope. True faith is visible and contagious even in suffering.
2. The Will of God (Sanctification - Ch. 4):
"This is the will of God, your sanctification." Abstain from sexual immorality; live a quiet life. God wants to save us from present sin, not just hell.
3. The Rapture (Ch. 4):
To comfort the grieving, Paul reveals: "The Lord himself will descend... and the dead in Christ will rise first." The Second Coming doctrine is for comfort, not just speculation.
Where does 1 Thessalonians meet you?
1. In Grief:
Lost a loved one? "Do not grieve as others do who have no hope." Christian grief is real but temporary. "See you later" is guaranteed.
2. Anxiety about the Future:
Jesus is coming back. This puts current problems in perspective. If the King is returning to fix everything, we can live bravely today.
3. Daily Life:
"Live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands." Being spiritual means being an exemplary citizen while waiting for Heaven.
