One of the shortest letters. Written to "the elect lady and her children" (likely code for a local church). The context is hospitality. False prophets were exploiting Christian kindness to spread lies. John writes to say: "Stop feeding them."
"Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son."2 JOHN
The theology teaches that Truth is the border of Love.
1. Love in Truth:
John uses "truth" five times in the intro. Christian love isn't just warm feelings; it is "loving in truth". Fellowship requires sharing the same reality about Jesus.
2. The Deceiver:
The test is simple: anyone who denies Jesus came in the flesh is a deceiver. John is radical: getting Jesus wrong means getting everything wrong.
3. Do Not Welcome Them:
The command shocks us: "Do not receive him into your house." He forbids supporting heretics. Funding error makes you an accomplice.
Where does 2 John meet you?
1. Excessive Tolerance:
In an age of "love is all that matters," John hits the brakes. Opening the door to everything is loving nothing. True love requires saying "no" to wolves.
2. Defending the Essence:
Music styles are negotiable; Jesus' nature is not. We must be uncompromising on the essential: Jesus is God incarnate.
3. The Danger of "Going Beyond":
John warns against those who "go ahead" of Christ's teaching. Real progress isn't going beyond the Gospel, but abiding in it.
