The shortest book in the NT Greek text. A personal note to Gaius regarding traveling missionaries. It revolves around three characters: Gaius (generous), Diotrephes (toxic leader seeking control), and Demetrius (integrity).
"Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul."3 JOHN
The theology connects Generosity with Truth.
1. Fellow Workers for the Truth (v. 8):
By supporting preachers, we become "fellow workers". You don't need to be in the pulpit to be essential. Support is as spiritual as preaching.
2. The Spirit of Diotrephes (v. 9):
Diotrephes "likes to put himself first". The issue was ego, not theology. A warning against authoritarianism and status-seeking in church leadership.
3. Prosperous Soul (v. 2):
"I pray that all may go well with you... as it goes well with your soul." Not a promise of automatic wealth, but a prayer for alignment. External health should reflect internal health.
Where does 3 John meet you?
1. Your Role in Mission:
You may not go to Africa, but is your home open? Supporting missionaries isn't charity; it's partnership. Be a Gaius.
2. Checking the Ego:
Diotrephes loved being first. Do you serve for Christ or to be noticed? If you feel threatened by others or need control, beware. Ego is the enemy.
3. The Greatest Joy:
"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." Legacy isn't buildings, but faithful disciples. Invest in people.
