Ephesians is the "Queen of Epistles". Written from prison, yet it is the most lofty. No urgent crises here. It is a circular letter with a cosmic vision of God's plan.
Structure is key: First 3 chapters have no commands, only descriptions of what God did. Only in the last 3 does Paul say how to act. Lesson: Being precedes Doing.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."EPHESIANS
The theology centers on union with Christ.
1. In Heavenly Places:
Key phrase: "in Christ". God blessed us "in the heavenly places in Christ". Spiritually, you are seated in heaven. Your spiritual reality is truer than your geography.
2. The Wall Torn Down:
The "Mystery" is the Church. The wall of hostility between Jew and Gentile is gone. The Church is God's display of wisdom to angels.
3. Spiritual Warfare (Ch. 6):
It ends with the Armor of God. Key verb: "Stand firm". We don't fight to gain ground (Jesus did that); we fight to hold it. Warfare is a defensive stance based on Christ's victory.
Where does Ephesians meet you?
1. In Identity Crisis:
Many live as spiritual beggars. Ephesians 1 is your bank statement: chosen, adopted, sealed. Stop trying to earn God's love; start enjoying it.
2. When Christianity Tires You:
If faith feels like heavy rules, you tried to walk (ch 4-6) before sitting (ch 1-3). Learn to "sit" in Jesus' finished work. Grace fuels holiness.
3. Fear of Evil:
Christ is "far above all rule and authority". You are in Christ. Thus, you are above too. It heals spiritual fear by reminding us of our position.
