The book marks a seismic shift. "Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan." The era of manna is over; the era of the sword begins. Joshua (Yehoshua, meaning "The Lord Saves") leads a brilliant military campaign to take the land promised to Abraham.
It is divided into the Conquest (Chaps 1-12) and the Division of the land (Chaps 13-24). It is theological proof that God keeps His promises, inch by inch.

The theology teaches that the Promise is free, but Possession requires a fight.
1. Holy War:
This was not a colonial war, but a divine judgment on a toxic Canaanite culture. The battle belonged to God. The "Commander of the Lord's Army" came to take over, not just to take sides.
2. The Sin of Achan:
The defeat at Ai teaches that the secret sin of one man can paralyze the progress of the whole nation. Collective holiness is vital.
3. "As for me and my house":
Joshua challenges the people to choose whom they will serve. Conquering the land is worthless if the heart is conquered by idols.
Where does Joshua meet you?
1. Facing Your Walls:
We all have a "Jericho". Walls don't fall by our strength, but by the strange obedience of faith. God asks for acts of faith that seem crazy before delivering victory.
2. Leaving Passivity:
Many live in a spiritual "wilderness". Joshua is a call to cross the Jordan. The land is yours, but you must have the courage to step on it.
3. Courage is not the Absence of Fear:
God tells Joshua "Be strong and courageous" because Joshua was afraid. Courage comes from the promise of Presence: "The Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
