Jude, Jesus' half-brother, intended to write about salvation but felt an urgent need to change topics. It is a fire alarm. False teachers had crept in unnoticed, turning grace into licentiousness.
He writes to summon the faithful to spiritual war. Truth is under attack.
"Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints."JUDE
The theology calls for vigilance and preservation.
1. Contend for the Faith (v. 3):
Faith was "once for all delivered to the saints". Truth is fixed. When the Gospel is attacked, passivity is cowardice. We must "contend" (agonize) for the truth.
2. Danger of Short Memory:
Jude uses history (wilderness, fallen angels, Sodom) to remind us that God judges rebellion. He warns that judgment is certain for those who play with grace.
3. Kept by God (v. 24):
It starts calling Christians "kept for Jesus Christ" and ends with the famous doxology: "To him who is able to keep you from stumbling." Our security is in God's grip.
Where does Jude meet you?
1. Defending Truth:
In a relativistic age, Jude challenges: do you know your faith enough to defend it? Contending isn't arguing online; it's living the undiluted Gospel courageously.
2. Rescuing the Doubters:
"Have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire." Distinguish wolves from confused sheep. Extend mercy to pull them back.
3. Final Security:
Afraid of falling? Read Jude 24. The weight of salvation isn't on your shoulders, but on the Only Wise God. He is able to present you "blameless with great joy".
