Obadiah is the shortest book in the OT, but emotionally heavy. It focuses on the judgment of Edom, descendants of Esau (Jacob's brother). It was an ancient family feud.
When Babylon invaded Jerusalem, Edom didn't help; they stood on the mountains cheering and capturing refugees. Obadiah is God's response to this brotherly betrayal.
"The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock."OBADIAH
The theology warns against self-sufficiency and grudges.
1. The Deception of Pride:
"The pride of your heart has deceived you." Edom lived in impenetrable rocks (Petra). They felt untouchable. God says: "Though you soar like the eagle... I will bring you down." No place is safe for arrogance.
2. The Law of Return:
"As you have done, it shall be done to you." The cruelty Edom planted would return to them. Divine justice is precise.
3. The Kingdom shall be the Lord's:
The book ends with hope. Human pride falls; God's Kingdom stands.
Where does Obadiah meet you?
1. Gloating over Enemies:
How do you react when an enemy falls? Do you smirk? God says: "Do not gloat over the day of your brother." Celebrating evil makes you complicit.
2. False Security:
Edom trusted rocks. We trust money or status. Obadiah reminds us that any security other than God is an illusion.
3. Family Feuds:
This is the sad end of Jacob and Esau's story. Untreated grudges became war. It warns us about bitterness in the family.
