The Anatomy of the Soul
David, Asaph, Korah & others | ~1000 years span
Listen

Psalms (Hebrew Tehilim) is the Bible's hymnbook. Unlike other books where God speaks to man, here man speaks to God. It collects 150 poems covering 1000 years, from Moses to the Exile.

Divided into five books, it covers every human experience: ecstasy, depression, war, peace. It was the book Jesus quoted most often.

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."
PSALMS

The theology teaches Radical Honesty.

1. Lament:

Surprisingly, over a third are laments. "How long, O Lord?". Biblical faith doesn't require you to fake happiness. God can handle your questions.

2. The Sung Messiah:

Psalms are deeply Christological. Psalm 22 describes the crucifixion centuries before it existed. Psalm 110 describes Christ's reign.

3. Selah (Pause):

Appearing 71 times, it means "stop and think". Haste is the enemy of depth. We need pauses for truth to sink in.

Where does Psalms meet you?

1. When Words Fail:

Psalms lends us words when we are speechless. It articulates what the soul feels. Crushed? Read Ps 77. Grateful? Ps 103. Afraid? Ps 27.

2. Emotional Management:

It teaches us not to repress feelings but to process them before God. David starts in despair and ends in praise. Prayer changes perspective.

3. Invitation to Praise:

It ends with a crescendo (Ps 150): "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." Praise is a weapon of war and our ultimate purpose.
