Zechariah ("The LORD Remembers") worked with Haggai. While Haggai was practical, Zechariah was visionary. The book has surreal night visions (colored horses, flying scrolls) and poetic oracles about the Messiah.
He sees further than any other "minor" prophet: the King on a donkey, betrayal for 30 silver coins, and His feet touching the Mount of Olives.
"Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts."ZECHARIAH
The theology unites Priesthood and Royalty.
1. Filthy Garments (Ch. 3):
Joshua the High Priest stands before God in filthy clothes. Satan accuses him. God defends him by changing his clothes. "I have removed your iniquity." It is Justification by Grace.
2. Not by Might (Zech 4:6):
"Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit." God's Kingdom advances not by military or political power, but by the supernatural action of the Holy Spirit.
3. The Pierced Messiah (Zech 12:10):
"They will look on me, on him whom they have pierced." He connects God's suffering with the people's purification. "On that day there shall be a fountain opened... for sin."
Where does Zechariah meet you?
1. Day of Small Things:
Feel insignificant? God asks: "Who has despised the day of small things?". God rejoices to see the plumb line in your hand. Size doesn't matter; the Spirit matters.
2. Facing the Accuser:
Hearing voices saying "you are dirty"? Remember Zechariah 3. God rebukes the accuser. "Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?". He saved you to clean you.
3. Prisoners of Hope:
He calls us "prisoners of hope". We are not trapped by fear. We are bound to the certainty that the King is returning.
