This is one of the most honest moments in the Bible. The greatest of prophets had doubt. John the Baptist didn't doubt God because he was sinning, he doubted because he was suffering. Jesus' silence regarding John's imprisonment is a profound mystery.

John expected a Messiah with an axe in his hand (Matt 3:10) to judge Rome and free Israel. Instead, Jesus was preaching love and healing the sick, while John rotted in Herod's cell. John's theology didn't match Jesus' reality.

Jesus didn't take John out of prison, but He sent an answer that took John out of doubt.
