There is a "hole" in Paul's timeline that confuses many historians. In Galatians 1:17, he confesses: "Nor did I go up to Jerusalem... but I went away into Arabia".
The Scenario
Saul was a zealous Pharisee, full of religion but empty of Christ. The light in Damascus blinded him physically, but Arabia healed him theologically. He needed to leave the noise of human tradition to hear the voice of Grace.
The Investigation
Why the desert? Because Paul's theology could not be a copy of Peter's. He needed to receive the Gospel straight from the source.
- Deconstruction: In solitude, Paul had to re-read the entire Old Testament through the lens of Jesus.
- Revelation: He calls his gospel "my gospel," not because he invented it, but because he received it by direct revelation, without human intermediaries.
The Conclusion
God is not in a hurry. He preferred to keep history's greatest apostle "soaking" for 3 years in the desert than to send him unprepared (with old concepts) to the mission. If you are in a time of waiting, you might be in your "Arabia time": it is not a waste of time, it is depth of foundation.
