INVESTIGATION: Simeon

The Necessary Scattering

START
Genesis 49:5
"Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations."
Swords of Violence
END
Genesis 49:7
"Cursed be their anger for it was fierce; and their wrath for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel."

Simeon's violence needed to be diluted. Unlike Levi (who became a priest), Simeon simply diminished. But there is redemption: it was a man named Simeon, just and devout, who held baby Jesus in the temple. The violent Simeon of Genesis finds peace in the Simeon of the Gospel.
